A great side dish for either a BBQ or quite simply being a part of your family pizza night. Not too dissimilar to a garlic naan too, this compliments a curry dish also.

Ingredients for pizza

Garlic, basil, oregano and butter.
  • Simple pizza dough
  • Garlic butter
  • Grated mozzarella

The simple pizza dough recipe on the blog forms the foundation of any pizzas I generally make. This recipe can be tweaked to use up ingredients you might have spare and you can also omit various ingredients like the sugar or malt.

If you are looking for pizza dough options and detailed instructions how to make it, try my pizza dough calculator. This offers all weights and measures to get a great dough.

For a slightly thicker variety you could look at my American pizza dough recipe too.

My garlic butter of choice when making the pizza is a home made mix of garlic and regular butter. You can add in some basil or oregano too. Adding pepper gives it a little kick too.

Instructions to make Garlic Pizza Bread

Based off a simple white pizza dough, the garlic pizza bread is really easy to make.

  1. Step 1: Choose a proved piece of dough to work with. 250g makes a nice size garlic bread to share for two.
Hand stretched sourdough pizza base.
  1. Step 2: Stretch the dough on a floured work surface to form the shape. If you are not comfortable stretching dough, you can use a rolling pin too.

  1. Step 3: Spread the garlic butter on the dough. It helps to have room temperature butter for ease of spreading.

  1. Step 4: Cook in a pizza oven for 60 to 90 seconds turning ensuring not to burn it. If using a conventional fan oven or electric oven, set it to it's hottest temperature possible and cook on a baking or pizza stone for about 5 to 6 minutes.

To help with cooking the pizza I suggest using a pizza peel to turn during cooking. Even if cooking on a conventional oven, the peel gives you more control around how much heat goes into the base.

Substitutions of Pizza Ingredients

Baking a garlic pizza bread requires limited ingredients so substitutions are not really an option. Having said that the choice of garlic butter can be switched out. There is pre made garlic butter such as this Lurpak variety which makes for easy storage.

  • Cheese - you can use vegan cheese and vegan butter to make this a vegan garlic pizza recipe. Also cheese which has been frozen will work well on this dish. Just drop it out of the freezer and on to the dough before cooking.
  • Garlic Butter - swap out home made garlic butter for shop bought.
  • Garlic seasoning sprinkles - you can flavour the garlic bread using sprinkles such as these Angus & Oink garlic butter seasoning or even the Dust Bros Gnarly Garlic seasoning.

Serving Suggestions For Garlic Pizza

Garlic pizza bread works with more dishes than you might expect. Here are some of the ways we serve it at home.

Pizza night is the obvious one. Slice it up and put it in the middle of the table alongside a simple margherita pizza or any of your usual pizzas. It disappears fast, so you might want to make two.

With curry is where this garlic bread really comes into its own. It works in much the same way as a homemade naan bread for scooping up sauce. Try it alongside a cauliflower katsu curry or the nduja chicken and naan bread recipe on the site.

As a BBQ side it pairs well with grilled meats. If you have a pizza stone for your BBQ, you can cook it outdoors too. Have a look at the best BBQ pizza stone guide if you are thinking about going down that route. It goes particularly well alongside BBQ chicken and garlic kebabs or Greek gyros kebabs.

With soup makes for a simple midweek meal. Tear it into strips and use it for dipping into a bowl of smoky BBQ winter vegetable soup.

As a starter or sharing dish just cut it into smaller pieces and serve it warm. If you want to put together a sharing spread, pair it with some pizza garlic dough balls and a bowl of mint garlic mayonnaise dip on the side.

Equipment

A good pizza oven will give excellent results for a garlic bread and can be cooked in 60 to 90 seconds.

A pizza peel will help with turning and controlling the pizza during the cooking process.

Storage

You can store garlic pizza bread in the fridge for a couple of days. Let it cool down and then wrap in foil or store in an airtight container.

The pizza can also be frozen once it has been cooked.

FAQ

Can I make garlic pizza bread without a pizza oven?

Yes. Set your conventional fan or electric oven to its highest temperature and cook on a baking stone or pizza stone for 5 to 6 minutes. Preheating the stone is important for getting a crisp base.

What cheese works best on garlic pizza bread?

Mozzarella is the standard choice as it melts well and gives you that classic stretch. A mix of mozzarella and cheddar works too if you want a stronger flavour.

Can I make garlic pizza bread ahead of time?

You can prep the dough and garlic butter in advance and store them separately in the fridge. Assemble and cook just before serving for the best results.

How do I stop garlic pizza bread going soggy?

Make sure your oven or pizza oven is properly preheated and avoid overloading the butter. A thin, even spread is all you need. Serving it straight away also helps keep it crisp.
