Ultimate Ninja Foodi air fryer chips

Cheap as chips and easy as pie. All food terms we have heard many times. The reason these phrases are popular is that they are true. When things are simple it works better for us and so these ultimate Ninja Foodi air fryer chips are simple, quick and easy.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Fries

There are only a couple of ingredients required to make these fries. Most of which you will already have if you have read through my list of useful kitchen pantry ingredients to have around.

Potatoes - I have spent many attempts finding the best potatoes for making home made chips. I've had the best results with King Edward potatoes so recommend trying those. Use one potato per person if you are making chips as a side dish. If you are having just chips and want more, use two potatoes per person.

Oil - If you have the option of a spray oil then I recommend two pumps for an even coating of oil. If you are measuring out, just use one table spoon of sunflower oil or rapeseed oil. Crisp and Dry oil is good for chips. You can use Olive Oil but make sure to avoid extra virgin olive oil as that has a low smoke point and cane make fries taste bitter.

Salt - A pinch of salt in the water while the chipped potatoes are soaking will help release the starch. Of course you can sprinkle some salt on before serving too.

How to make air fryer chips in the Ninja Foodi

The crispiest chips come from good preparation and a hot air fryer. Follow these steps for great chips from your Ninja Foodi every time.

  1. Step 1: Peel and chop the potatoes into chips, approx. 1cm thick. Soak the pre cut chips in cold water with a pinch of salt for at least 30 minutes to let the starch escape. The water will go cloudy when this is taking place.
  1. Step 2: After the chips have been soaking for the time, drain off the water and lay the fries on kitchen roll or a tea towel to dry them out fully.
  1. Step 3: Dry the water bowl, then place the chips back in there. Then drizzle 1tbsp of oil over the chips and mix round to coat them all evenly.
  1. Step 4: In Air fry mode, pre-heat the air fryer to 200C for at least 5 minutes. Leave the crisping tray at the bottom but remove all the racks.
  1. Step 5: Tip the chips into the air fryer and cook for 24 - 26 minutes. Give them a shake around to even up the cooking about half way through. The Ninja Foodi will tell you to "Shake" at the appropriate time.
  1. Step 6: Serve up the chips and sprinkle with a little salt.

Tips for crispier air fryer chips

Allow more time to soak the chipped potatoes

The recipe suggests a 30 minute pre soak in salted water. If you have some extra time to spare, the longer the chipped potatoes can soak the better. This is because it allows the starch to soak from the potato (this is why the water goes a bit cloudy when you move the chips around).

Dry the potatoes fully

When the chipped potatoes have been soaked then drain them off and pat them dry. You can use kitchen roll for this or even better a tea towel. If the chips are fully dry before the oil goes on, this will make a crispier chip at the end.

Soak the chips in water for at least 30 minutes

We all love a bit of crispiness whether it be on a chip or a crispy baked potato so having that crunch adds to the bite. It tastes even better knowing these are ultimate air fryer chips and so are the healthier option than using a deep fat fryer.

From Potato To Chip

Chips (or fries as the US knows them) are born out of a simple potato. Chopped into long thin slices (chipped) they are then best soaked in water for at least 30 minutes. The longer the better, up to an hour works well. This will help release the starch in the potatoes and then in turn make them crisp up so you really do have the ultimate Ninja Foodi air fryer chips.

Suggested side dishes to accompany Ninja Foodi fries

There are a few types of dishes these go well with. For a start, burger and chips is an obvious choice so you can try my paprika and onion burgers to put these with.

You could also make the mint and garlic mayo dip and plonk a dollop of that on the side for dipping in as an alternative to ketchup.

  • 500 g Potatoes Maris Piper or Rooster work well
  • 1 tablespoon Oil

Instructions

  • Peel and chop the potatoes into chips, approx 1cm thick.

  • Drain away the water and dry off the chips with a tea towel or kitchen roll
  • Set up the air fryer (use the crisp plate in the Ninja Foodi). Preheat the Air Fryer to 200℃ (takes about 5 minutes to get to temperature)

  • Cook them for 20-25 minutes, shaking them up about half way through cooking to ensure even heat.

Notes

Don't put too many chips in the air fryer, if it gets over loaded then they will not crisp up.
