Who doesn't love a bacon butty with a cup of tea? Let me show you how to cook bacon in the air fryer in next to no time. In under 10 minutes you will have a tasty bacon sandwich ready to eat.
This is a recipe showing how to make a bacon sandwich in the air fryer. The recipe takes about 10 minutes to make and shows how it can be switched out for other types of bacon too.

I love this recipe as it is a great recipe to put on for breakfast if you work from home. It only takes 10 minutes to pull together and can be easily cooked while making a cup of tea.
Ingredients for a successful bacon butty
There are only a couple of requirements to get a crispy piece of bacon from the air fryer. You don't even need to use oil.

- Bacon
- Air Fryer
- Bread, ketchup and a cup of tea (optional)
See recipe card for quantities.
How to air fry bacon
I show you how to cook this in the air fryer although it really is simple. I'd suggest pre-heating the air fryer to 200C before you put the foil in. This is because the foil has a habit of blowing all around if not weighed down.

- Step 1: Preheat the air fryer to 200C. Place the bacon on the rack while the air fryer heats up. Don't overlap the bacon where possible.

- Step 2: Place the foil in the air fryer.

- Step 3: Place the bacon on the rack on top of the foil.

- Step 4: Cook in the air fryer for 8 minutes at 200C

- Step 5: After 4 minutes, make sure to turn the bacon over.

- Step 6: Cook until you have the bacon at your crispy preference.
Be careful when removing the cooked bacon from the pot as it will be hot. I recommend using a pair of wooden or plastic tongs to make sure not to scratch the inside of your air fryer.
Hint: The foil stops the bacon splattering fat all around and makes cleaning an air fryer so much less hassle. When done, just remove the foil and throw it in the bin.
Bacon cooking time
There are a few variations to cooking bacon in the air fryer to get it how you like it. I appreciate different people like different levels of crispiness, so this chart will give a guide on how long to cook for at a temperature of 200C.
| Bacon type | Level of cooking | Time (minutes) |
|---|---|---|
| Thin cut / Streaky | Lightly cooked | 5 |
| Medium cooked | 6 | |
| Very crispy | 7 | |
| Thick cut | Lightly cooked | 6 - 7 |
| Medium cooked | 8 | |
| Very crispy | 9 |
Substitutions for bacon
There is not a lot to substitute when it comes to a bacon dish. My only recommendation is to try different types of bacon or even a vegetarian bacon alternative. These can too be air fried.
- Vegetarian bacon - I'd recommend the Richmond vegetarian variety. This is the closest to bacon we've discovered so far in both smell and taste.
- Bread - There are various bread types you can use to make this into a bacon sandwich. Try a flatbread or a sourdough loaf.
- Bacon types - There are smoked, back bacon, unsmoked, loin fillets. There are plenty of types to choose from and each sort will give a different flavour and texture.
With a multitude of low fat, vegan and vegetarian options - this dish can suit most diets with a few tweaks.
Variations to level up your sandwich
You can try adding a few toppings or sauces to give the bacon a bit of something more.
- Cheese - add some grated cheese to the bacon in the air fryer for 1 minute before serving. This will melt the cheese over the bacon.
- Meat lovers - add more meat such as a sausage. Check out the sausage sandwich air fryer recipe.
- Sauces - we should take a vote on which is best - ketchup or brown sauce?
Equipment to make a bacon sandwich
There are lots of air fryers on the market today and choosing one can be difficult. I use the Ninja Foodi 15 in 1 air fryer. This allows me to have a versatile range of cooking options. My kitchen is not huge since we downsized and so making the most of available space was important to me.
Having the Ninja Foodi means I don't need a rice cooker, slow cooker, deep fryer... the list goes on. Strictly speaking I could get rid of my oven too, but I think I'd regret doing so.
Check out the variety of air fryers on Amazon and see what might suit your household.
How to store bacon
Once cooked, the bacon will be good to eat hot or cold. It will keep in the fridge for a couple of days and then if you want to reheat it, pop it back in the air fryer for 2 to 3 minutes until heated through.

If you have trouble with the bacon curling up when in the air fryer, try snipping the fat or bacon rind side with some scissors. This will stop it from curling round and allow it to cook evenly.
FAQ
Depending how crispy you want it, fresh bacon can take between 5 and 8 minutes to cook. Aim to cook it for 8 minutes but check it half way through at 4 minutes, taking care to review every couple of minutes after that.
Bacon will cook just as well directly on the bottom of the air fryer or on the roasting plate. I prefer to cook mine on the rack so that any fat that comes off will drip away from the bacon. Add some foil to the bottom of the air fryer to catch any fat that runs off and help keep it clean.
