Things you need to know about reheating pizza in an air fryer

Reheating pizza is a great way to get some left over pizza and make it taste great again. Here in the UK we don't often get good weather to have the outdoor pizza oven out all the time so reheating pizza in the air fryer UK style is a must learn skill. There are a few methods that work for reheating pizza, but for the best tasting version I think the air fryer is the way to go.

This recipe is a simple directional post to guide you through reheating garlic bread (in this example) but the same process will apply for reheating Pizza Hut pizza or even reheating Domino's, Papa John's, Greggs or home made pizza in the Ninja Foodi air fryer.

Ingredients and requirements for reheating leftover pizza

It's probably a given that you will need some left over pizza as one of the main ingredients here! Other than that, some aluminium foil and an air fryer.

There is no recipe card for this recipe as it is basic instructions for reheating the pizza or garlic bread in a Ninja air fryer.

How to reheat leftover pizza with a Ninja air fryer

It's quite a simple job to reheat any left over pizza in the Ninja Foodi air fryer. The trick to a successful reheat is to pre-heat the air fryer to 200C before cooking and also to make sure your pizza slices are spread out enough on the wire rack trays.

  1. Step 1: Place the cold pizza or garlic bread slices on the air fryer rack. Arrange them so they are not overlapping if possible.

  1. Step 2: To preheat the air fryer, set the temperature to 200C and the timer for 8 minutes. We are going to pre-heat for 5 minutes and then cook for 3 minutes.

  1. Step 3: Once preheated (after the 5 minutes) open the lid and place in the air fryer rack.

  1. Step 4: Cook in oven for 3 minutes. Have a quick look when there is 1 minute to go to make sure nothing is burning. Domino's pizza can be a bit thicker than home made, so could take a little longer (4 mins total).

  1. Step 5: When the time is up, check the cheese is bubbling again. It might have gone a little darker in colour too, but that's ok.

  1. Step 6: Serve on to a plate taking care not to burn yourself when lifting it out.

The cooking time can vary depending how many slices you have in and what toppings are on the pizza too. If reheating any form of meat, ensure the topping is piping hot.

Top Tip - Stacking Racks

The Ninja Foodi air fryer comers with stackable racks that you can place different levels of food on. Three in total (the crisping tray at the base and then 2 racks). If you are reheating a lot of slices, you will need to do 5 minutes at total but staggering how you add the food.

  • 5 minutes to go: Crisp tray at the bottom, add slices here and cook for 1 minute
  • 4 minutes to go: Add the first rack and cook for a further 2 minutes
  • 2 minutes to go: Add the top rack and cook the pizza closest to the heating element until the time is up.

Staggering the time the pizza slices are added will ensure an even cook across the slices.

Reheating thin Italian base pizza with an air fryer

If you have a thinner slice of pizza that will quickly burn without being in the air fryer too long then you can place some tin foil around it. This will help stop it from burning and ensure a fully heated piece of pie without the burned taste.

Adding toppings to left over pizza

It is possible to change up the pizza topping if doing a reheat. In my example pictures you will see that I'm reheating a garlic bread slice. I could have added some more cheese on there to make it a cheesy garlic bread. Some other ideas:

  • More garlic - a few extra slices of garlic butter would make the pizza a bit more potent if you wanted a stronger garlic bread.
  • Spicy - add some chilli flakes or some jalapeno peppers to give it a bit of extra spice. Further more, a dash of siracha sauce will give it an extra kick.
  • Meat lovers - how about adding some pepperoni slices or some Parma ham to give it a meat feast taste.

Equipment needed for reheating cold pizza

The most important piece of this reheating success is the use of the Ninja Foodi Air Fryer. I love my air fryer and use it so often that it's certainly not a fad and can be brought out for many occasions. It's the Multi 15-in-1 single zone air fryer that I use however the new dual stack air fryers will perform the job just as well.

Set at 200C (which is the default setting on the air fryer means the pizza reheats quickly and can sometimes come out better than it was when it was freshly cooked.

I think having a good pair of oven gloves is important for getting the reheated food out of the heat. Also having a surface to place the hot rack like these folding trivets shown here are important to make sure you don't burn any work tops.

Can you store leftover pizza once it's reheated?

As we are using up leftovers with this recipe, once the pizza is reheated then it should not be reheated again afterwards. If you need to store the pizza after being reheated then you can use tin foil or once cold, wrap it in some cling film.

Top Tip - Cling film dispensers

If you get fed up of trying to find the end of cling film then I can recommend using this dispenser from Baco. The cling film unrolls off the roll so easily and cuts by pressing the lid of the box. The end is then free to pick up and pull another amount off the roll easily for next time when you are ready.

I cannot begin to image how many hours this has saved me from trying to find the end of a roll - or even worse - when it splits and unravels at different places across the roll.

FAQs for reheating leftover cold pizza

I don't have an air fryer, can I use a microwave to reheat pizza?

Yes you can. Place the pizza on a microwavable plate and put in the microwave for 30 seconds on full power. Check it after 30 and repeat until the middle of the pizza cheese is bubbling.

How long to reheat pizza in the air fryer?

Do you reheat pizza with water?

Reheating pizza with water is a method that can be used when doing so in a frying pan. To do this, heat up a frying pan and add in the pizza. Then add a splash of water to an empty area of the frying pan base and then put a lid on the pan. This will cause steam in the frying pan and cook the top at the same time. It takes about 3 to 5 minutes to steam frying pan a pizza slice.
