🥄 Introduction to the air fryer Greggs sausage roll

Having a quick lunch time snack which can be thrown into the air fryer is sometimes useful for busy days. If you work from home or just need a quick bite to eat for the kids, the Greggs sausage roll is now available to cook at home.

The sausage rolls come in a four pack and are available from plenty of high street retailers. They are usually found in the frozen food section of the shop.

🍴 Ingredients for the Greggs sausage roll

This recipe post is instructional to getting the sausage roll in the air fryer, cooked and on to your plate as soon as possible rather than making them from scratch. However for a little more insight into the Greggs sausage roll ingredients, please see below.

  • Puff pastry - The wrapping around the sausage roll is quite unique to the flavour of a Greggs sausage roll. If you were making your own then you can buy puff pastry sheets in the supermarket. It comes in a roll of pastry and can be bought either frozen (but needs defrosting before use) or chilled.
  • Sausage meat - Pork meat is used and rolled within the puff pastry. In the Greggs sausage roll this is pre cooked and needs warming through as part of the final heating process. If you were making your own then it would be possible to bake from raw without needing to precook the sausage meat.
  • Salt & Pepper - All good dishes have salt and pepper seasonings. The amounts are obviously a secretive part of the recipe.

You could always try having a go at making your own sausage rolls using the above ingredients. For details on timings, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Top Tip

In my instructions I advise to flip the Greggs sausage roll a couple of times throughout the cooking process. This gives the opportunity to brown off on all sides equally and make for a nicer looking snack. Be careful when flipping it over, the inside of the Ninja Foodi is very hot so consider using some kitchen tongs to help you. I recommend the bamboo or silicon type such as these as metal ones can damage the inside of the air fryer.

🍳 Using egg wash on a Greggs Sausage Roll

Using an egg wash will give your Greggs sausage roll a shiny golden brown finish once cooked. This can be achieved by cracking an egg into a bowl, add a pinch of salt and pepper and beating it with a fork. Once all broken down, use a pastry brush to paint on a thin layer of egg wash as the Greggs sausage rolls come out of the freezer before they go in the Ninja Foodi air fryer.

If you use a silicon pastry brush like this one, then you can paint the egg wash directly on the Greggs sausage rolls when they are in the air fryer before you start to cook them.

The simple answer is yes. You can cook a steak bake in the air fryer. I found the best way to do this is to keep it in a bit of foil and place that on the crisp bake roasting tray. Cooking again at 180C but for a bit longer - 22 minutes seems to be about right.

You may want to turn over the steak bake half way through cooking to get even coverage (because of the foil).

Egg wash works well again, so try starting with it face down, then turn the right way up and egg wash for the final half of the cooking.
