Choosing the best beer for beer bread can be a bit of a challenging task. So I am trying to find a good beer bread recipe. This time is for Estrella Beer Bread. Using Estrella Damm which is brewed in Barcelona, Spain this beer is a favourite for holiday makers.
This post discovers the art of making beer bread with Estrella Damm beer. I use a simple recipe to capture the flavour of the beer with the texture of the bread. This is an experimentation recipe but actually turned out to be a tasty loaf.

Why Beer Bread?
If you have a bottle of beer lying around after a tasty summer BBQ then why not experiment with it and add it to some bread recipes? I am always up for trying different recipes when it comes to baking, so beer bread was an obvious one to try.
Different Beers
I wanted to see what it was going to be like to try different beers in bread so I thought I'd go through and do a beer bread recipe every time I had a different one to try. This time it is for Estrella Damm beer.
Imagine you're on a sunny Mediterranean beach, the sound of waves gently crashing against the shore, and you're holding a cold, golden bottle of Estrella Damm. Founded in 1876 in Barcelona, this beer has been perfecting its craft for nearly 150 years.
Estrella Damm is more than just a beer; it's a sip of Spanish culture and tradition. Brewed with Mediterranean ingredients, it's made with barley, rice, and hops and these give it a crisp, refreshing taste.
It's not just about the taste, though. Estrella Damm is sold with the image of having an amazing ability to bring people together, along with giving me great memories of holidays abroad. I want to capture that in a loaf!
Why No Yeast?
So the theory goes that as part of the brewing process for beer, there is yeast already in there. So that, along with the baking soda in the self raising flour means that there is no need for a separate addition of yeast.
I'm in two minds whether to add salt to the bread so my first loaf I tried without. Generally bread would at the very least include flour, yeast salt and water however beer bread is different.
No yeast vs yeast beer bread
The removal of actual yeast and using the yeast in the beer means the fermentation is partly done already and is feeding off the sugar in the beer. The self raising agent in the flour means there is no huge demand for yeast to rise the bread.
How to make Estrella beer bread

- Preheat the oven to 200C/375f/Gas Mark 6 and grease a loaf tin with stork or butter.

- Mix all the flour, beer and sugar in a bowl and once fully mixed, pour into the loaf tin.

- Place the tin in the oven to cook for 50 minutes. After about 30 minutes, turn the tin around in the oven for even cooking.

- Once the time is up, take out and allow to cool for another 30 minutes on a cooling rack.
Baking the beer bread
I use a typical 2lb bread tin (400g loaf type) for my beer bread. It can pop over the top on the rise but it looks great when it comes out of the oven.
Bake the beer bread loaf at 200c/375f/Gas 6 for 50 minutes. It's worth keeping an eye on it though and checking it after 30 minutes. Maybe turn it around in the oven for even cooking - if your oven is anything like mine one side is hotter than the other.
After the time is up, tip out and tap on the bottom of the loaf. It should sound hollow meaning it's cooked. Leave on a cooling rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Variations
The Estrella Damm company also do an Estrella Damm Lemon beer which has a lager top type taste to it. This is one that I'd be tempted to try as a sweeter dessert cake rather than a bread as such, but I've not experimented with this just yet.
The bread will have risen in the tin and the baking powder will also help give a rise (along with the yeast). The loaf should be quite solid but also give a hollow tapping sound when tapped underneath.
The beer is 4.6% alcohol content so while not overly strong, it has a good taste to it.
The bread is cooked using 1 bottle of beer to you would have to eat a lot of bread to feel any effects. The cooking process of the bread will also tame any alcohol content so it is unlikely! You'll be too full of bread before you feel any effects of alcohol.
Serve this with...
What's beer bread good to eat with?
I'd steer clear of having this for your sandwiches unless you want to get a name for yourself. However it's great for dipping in oils, or serving alongside a BBQ or salad. Beer bread cheese on toast is a sure fire winner too!
For a more savoury suggestion, try making an egg mayo sandwich using the beer bread. Great comfort food for a night in.
