This is my favourite comfort food and this super easy toad in the hole recipe will give you a simple way to use up ingredients, or just ease your hunger when it strikes.
Toad in the hole batter uses the same combination of ingredients as regular Yorkshire pudding. Instead of separate puddings, the batter is poured into a tray.
This is a recipe for making Yorkshire pudding batter and using it for a toad in the hole dish.
Super Easy Toad in the Hole
Almost anything can go in this dish. In the dish pictured there are both pork sausages and vegetarian Quorn sausages along with some carrots and some sprouts. A bit of a Christmas dinner left over meal but you really can add anything in you like. Serve this up on its own with a bit of gravy and this will be a meal in itself.
Not forgetting, the batter can be used for a basic Yorkshire pudding recipe too. The batter is really versatile and its the egg yolk which gives it a nice lift. I tried this with 2 eggs and the rise was not as good as it was with three.
Add Just About Anything
Don't forget you can put anything in this dish to use up leftovers. Remember that swede and turnip we froze in a previous post? Well you can add that to the toad in the hole if you like.
The oil temperature is the key to getting a good rise on this dish. Make sure the oil is hot and you don't keep the oven door open any longer than necessary.

The bubbles will show there is loads of air in this mix. I use an electric hand blender whisk to make this easier, but it works just as well with a normal hand whisk. Make sure to let the batter mix sit for a while before putting in the oil. Ideally it needs to get to room temperature (up to an hour depending on where you are in the world).
A good toad in the hole will rise in the oven after being in there for about 15 minutes but the trick is to NOT open the oven door. Watch it through the window but do not open it for at least 25 minutes! Otherwise it will all fall down and this easy toad in the hole recipe will not seem so easy!
Never open the door of the oven while cooking Yorkshire pudding or toad in the hole. Losing the heat will deflate your puddings!
This recipe works well as a stand alone dish but you can use the batter to make other Yorkshire pudding dishes.
