Instructions to make oven baked salmon
Served with a potato and some scrumptious steamed vegetables, this is a tasty and healthy meal which can be cooked up in half an hour.
For the adventurous of you out there, you could smoke salmon on a smoker - I use a Weber Smokey Mountain as my smoker of choice. Check out my BBQ and smoker recipes for more inspiration. For speed and ease however, it is much easier to cook salmon in the oven and makes it much easier for rustling up after a long day at work.

Adding flavour to the oven baked salmon
Choose a nice selection of herbs to go on the top of your oven food to add an extra bit of flavour. I have a selection of parsley, mint, rosemary and oregano growing in the back garden. I normally take a selection of these and chop them up finely sprinkling them on the top of the salt and peppered salmon before they go in the oven. This just adds a little extra flavour to the toppings.
Another option is to top the salmon with a little paprika or cayenne pepper. This will give the salmon a bit of a kick but add a nice warming aftertaste to the palette.
Salting the salmon skin and also the flesh will add some flavour to the meat. However timing is crucial. Salt too early and you risk starting to cure the salmon. Salt too late and then there is no point and an overly salty fish. For most fish dishes I recommend only salting 15 to 20 minutes before cooking.
Vegetable Sides
Salmon goes with all sorts of vegetables however my favourite ones are broccoli, carrot and green beans. The reason I like to use these is to thrown them all in my set of steamer pans and leave them on the hob for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. I can time it well enough to let my salmon in the oven finish cooking and the veg to be ready at the same time.
The fact they can all be cooked together with your oven baked salmon means less washing up (or space in the dishwasher). If you swap the jacket potato for a portion of rice too, you can cook the rice in the bottom steamer pan and the veg on the top. Even less washing up!
