I'm excited to see more in the range available from Dust Bros. The guys behind the amazing BBQ rubs have now released a range of snacks in the form of nuts.

This is a review of the new range of nuts from Dust Bros. The review covers Serious Spice and Mega Mexican variety.

Why do I know Dust Bros?

You'll have heard of the Dust Bros range as I have previously done a review of their BBQ rubs as part of the "Great Rub Off" competition. This time though, I learnt from their mailing list that these nuts were new in the range and were available to buy.

I quickly got out my wallet and bought some of the Mega Mexican range. There are three flavours in the range:

  • Jerk Bezerk
  • Serious Spice
  • Mega Mexican

I didn't go for the other two as Mrs Dad What Cooks is not a fan of overly spicy food. However - disclaimer here - the guys at Dust Bros were kind enough to throw in some of the Serious Spice as a freebie so big thank you for that!

Further disclaimer - I am not being paid or incentivised to write this review. I have opted to do so of my own accord just because I want to support the guys there in what they do.

So what's in the nuts?

The flavours are immense. I was expecting peanuts but was really pleased to learn that you get a mix of peanuts, cashews (my favourite) and almond. As you can see below there is Almond (left), Cashew (centre) and Peanut (right).

Additional flavours

I learned also as I was eating that there was a hint of various additions. Although the packaging I had got mine in was the prototype bags (real ones I'm informed are nearly ready) it does actually say on there with the ingredients.

The Mega Mexican had a hint of lime and the Seriously Spicy had some hot honey to make it a little sweeter and sticky. This was a nice touch (as you can see its clear on the packaging but I was just too excited to read it.

Spicy honey-coated nuts with chili flakes and cumin for a flavourful snack.

The Verdict

Both flavours deliver. The Mega Mexican has a good warmth to it without being overwhelming, and that hint of lime lifts it beyond your standard flavoured nut. If you want something with a bit more kick, the Serious Spice lives up to its name. The hot honey addition gives it a sweet and spicy balance that makes them dangerously moreish.

The mix of cashews, almonds and peanuts is a smart choice too. It keeps things interesting and gives you a variety of textures in each handful rather than just being a bag of peanuts with seasoning on.

Would I buy them again?

Without question. The Mega Mexican would be my go-to for snacking, and the Serious Spice would be brilliant alongside a cold beer at a BBQ. At the time of writing, the range is available directly from the Dust Bros website. I'd recommend keeping an eye on their range as I suspect the Jerk Bezerk would be worth a try as well.

If you want to see what their BBQ rubs are like, have a read of my Dust Bros Rub Review where I put them head to head in the Great Rub Off.

Nuts FAQs

What nuts are in the Dust Bros range?

Each bag contains a mix of peanuts, cashews and almonds rather than just a single type of nut.

How spicy are Dust Bros nuts?

The Mega Mexican has a mild to medium warmth with lime flavour. The Serious Spice is hotter with a hot honey sweetness. Neither is unmanageable, but if you prefer milder flavours, Mega Mexican is the safer bet. I've not tried Jerk Bezerk yet.

Where can you buy Dust Bros nuts?

At the time of writing, they are available directly from the Dust Bros website. Check their site for the latest availability and any new flavours.

Are Dust Bros nuts suitable for vegetarians?

Check the packaging for the full allergen and dietary information as this may vary between flavours.
