Equipment

Ingredients

  • 340 g Corned beef 1 tin of corned beef is usually 340g
  • 600 g Potatoes
  • 1 Cabbage
  • 3 Carrots
  • 2 Celery sticks
  • 250 ml Water 1 to 1½ cups, or use stock.
  • ½ teaspoon Black pepper

Instructions

Preparation of ingredients

  • Prepare the vegetables:
Peel the potatoes and cut them into ½-inch cubes.
Peel the carrots and slice them into ¼-inch sections.
Slice the celery into ½ inch sections.
Slice the celery into 1 inch sections.

Loading up the slow cooker

  • Prepare the slow cooker by spraying the bottom of it with a few squirts of olive oil cooking spray or rubbing around with some butter.
  • Load the slow cooker by placing the potato in the bottom of the pot with carrots and celery.
Place corned beef on the vegetables. Break it all up with a spatula or wooden spoon. If it doesn't fit comfortably in your slow cooker, cut it into 2 or 3 pieces. Slice the cabbage into 8 wedges. Place the wedges with the meat and then add the water (or stock). Season with the black pepper and give everything a stir.

Cooking the corned beef hash

  • Cover and cook on high for 1 hour.
Reduce the heat to low and continue to cook the Corned Beef and Cabbage on the low setting for 6 to 8 hours, or until the corned beef and vegetables are fork tender.
Stir half way through cooking (around 3 hours in) just to make sure everything is mixed together nicely.

Notes

Using corned beef from a tin is the original recipe but you can always use other cheaper cuts of beef. To use braising steak or diced beef then I recommend that you brown off the meat first. This will mean your dish ends up more like a regular beef stew but it will certainly still be very tasty.
Timings for slow cooking food can vary between slow cookers. Check on the contents after a few hours and give them a stir.
